Twitter announced a new layout and design yesterday and it looks impressive. Clean and simple is how I would describe it. You can see the official video HERE.

Twitter continues to grow on me and I find myself using it more and more. It is a great way to connect with others who have similar interests. I find myself following sporting teams and their blogs, websites and information. One area I felt twitter was being Facebook was brand pages. Looks like that may be changing as well. It’s still in testing, but it looks like brand pages for Twitter are on their way.

Web Designer Depot has a solid list of Twitter tools to help increase social networking. Think I am going to try a few out and see how they go. You can see the full list HERE.

Never thought I would be a Twitter fan, but I see the potential and future this has to offer. If you are not on the Twitter bandwagon just yet, it’s time to hop on. It’s a great way to network and promote your events.

I’ve used Twitter before for work and simply linked it to our Facebook page to tweet when something was updated. I’m now on there with a personal account @EdNichter. I never thought I had a reason to be on there. What was I going to Tweet? Woke up, went to work, went to gym, ate, went to bed. I’m pretty boring.

What I learned however is the advantage of Twitter is not YOUR Tweets, but the folks you follow on there. There is always a wealth of information and opinions, a CONSTANT stream. I tend to follow my interests: UofL sports, politics, web/graphic design and comedians. I enjoy replying to Matt Jones, the #1 UK cheerleader. For someone who has dogged UofL athletics for far to long, it is a bit of solice I can reply back to his garbage.

So if you feel like venturing on there, feel free to follow me. I never thought I would enjoy it, but it is starting to prove me wrong.

QR Code stands for quick response code and is a digitized symbol people can scan with their cell phone and will take them to a website or provide further information to a potential customer. If you ever see someone in a store scanning a barcode, they are using the same free app it takes to scan a QR code.

Although this is a fairly new technology, small businesses can still take advantage of them; usually at a fairly low cost. I have seen them used to link to a coupon or discount, newsletter, or survey. QR codes can be placed practically anywhere, but some of the more popular spots are on print ads, business cards, menus and signage.

This is yet another social media resource any business can use to interact and engage new and current customers. QR will only continue to grow and become more recognizable. Why not get ahead of your competition and start using them? Offer a discount to customers who scan your code that links to a printable coupon!

You may be wondering what exactly is a Facebook landing page? To see a great list of how major corporations do it, click here. Simply put, the Facebook landing page is a visual introduction to your companies business page on Facebook. It’s not only geared to get someone to “Like” your page, but is a representation of your branding, style and professionalism. Remember, you can have either a personal or business page on Facebook. Realtors REALLY need to understand this. If you’re going to promote your listings, it needs to be done on a business page, NOT your personal page. I don’t really care, but Facebook does. They will shut down your personal page if they catch you. That goes for any type of business, if your going to promote, do it through a business listing and NOT your personal profile.

I recently spoke with a small business owner at a seminar and showed her the landing page I did for the University Club Louisville. She asked “What program did you use to do this?, I love it!” I told her her was a process of using Photoshop, image maps, coding and a Facebook application called Static HTML. (There are several apps you can use, I just prefer this one) For most business owners who do not have a Facebook business page or maintain their own, it makes sense to hire someone to bring it up to speed and maintain. There also is a certain level of coding involved in a landing page, especially if you want video or interactive elements such as roll overs. It’s not worth pulling your hair out over, trust me! Who would have ever thought a few years ago a Facebook page would be as important as a website? Believe it or not, you need both. Facebook is going nowhere soon and you have to have a professional presence on there, because if you don’t your competition sure will.

The main goal of your landing page should be two things:

1) Get the “LIKE”. If you can get a potential customer or client to like your page, you open up a whole new line of communication with them. You can also offer special discounts or rates to your fans. Once a person Likes you, their friends will see it as well, opening the possibility of more fans.

2) Drive traffic to your website. Your landing page can provide direct links to your website. This is especially important if you sell items online. Increased traffic is never a bad thing to any website.

If you have any questions or need a landing page, just contact me. I’m looking to further my portfolio in this area and would be more than happy to create a landing page you can be proud of!

Don’t know who was responsible for this mess but I would like to spend 5 minutes with them and ask why they felt the people of Louisville would enjoy a gay superhero theme. Gay superhero you ask? Our hero has an uncanny resemblance to Cameron Tucker of Modern Family on ABC.

(Good show! By the way Sofia Vergara you need a husband?) It’s not like he is even a serious superhero, its a fat guy with a cheap costume. Maybe they are aiming for a Southend Halloween theme…..

The superhero is not the only issue that irks me. What is up with the font selection? Looks like some sort of highway graffiti. Not only does our fat super hero suck, he enjoys tagging random interstate signs apparently.

What is Superfest anyways? What is so “Super” about the Derby Festival anymore? I guess the same people who thought this was a great theme to go with also still believe parades and steamboat races are cool. Oh, almost forgot about the crappy bed races.

Time to wake up Derby Festival. The Derby is a classy, prestigious event that is the yearly marketing tool for this city. How you all decided this theme is going to be well received is beyond me.
